Plot Summary

The film is narrated by Amy (Laila Rouass), a foreign reporter who visits Rajasthan to investigate the case of Bhanwari Devi, whose character is renamed as Sanwari in the film. Amy meets Sanwari's husband Sohan (Raghubir Yadav), a rickshaw-puller who helps her and her friend Ravi (Rahul Khanna) to reach Sanwari's village. Sohan tells them the story of how Sanwari was gang-raped by five men from the upper-caste Gurjar community, who were enraged by her work as a Saathin, a grassroots worker employed by the government to create awareness against child marriage, dowry and other social evils. Sanwari faced a lot of resistance and hostility from the conservative villagers, who boycotted her family and threatened her with violence. Despite this, Sanwari continued her work with the support of Shobha Devi (Deepti Naval), a social worker who recruited her as a Saathin.

One day, when Sohan was away from home, Sanwari was brutally assaulted by five men in front of her daughter Kamli. The men also beat up Sohan when he returned home. Sanwari and Sohan decided to seek justice and filed a police complaint against the rapists. However, they faced many hurdles and obstacles in their quest for justice. The police refused to register their complaint without a medical report, the doctor refused to issue a medical report without a court order, and the court dismissed their case due to lack of evidence and witnesses. The rapists were also backed by a powerful politician Dhanraj Meena (Govind Namdeo), who hired a lawyer Pratap Chauhan (Gulshan Grover) to defend them. The rapists roamed freely in the village, taunting and harassing Sanwari and her family.

Sanwari's case attracted national and international attention, with the media and human rights activists highlighting her plight. The Prime Minister of India entrusted the investigation to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), who arrested the rapists and brought them to trial. However, the trial was also marred by corruption, bias and intimidation. The judge acquitted the rapists on the grounds that they could not have raped Sanwari because she was from a lower caste and they were from a higher caste. The judge also questioned Sanwari's character and motives, and accused her of fabricating the rape story to get money and fame. Sanwari was devastated by the verdict, but vowed to continue fighting for justice.
