On the Weaponization of AI and the Persistence of Digital Bias

Subject: Confronting Digital Dehumanization and the Necessity of Sovereign Intelligence

The recent use of AI to revive 19th-century racial tropes against former President Barack Obama and Mrs. Michelle Obama is a sobering reminder that technology is not a neutral arbiter of truth. It reflects its training data and the intent of its users. On the weaponization of AI and the persistence of digital bias, I thought it would be appropriate to address the position of STEAM Sparks Think STEAM Careers podcast. We advocate for AI as a “Digital Lab Partner”, a tool meant to accelerate human potential and bridge the opportunity gap for marginalized groups.

The “Calculus of Resistance” in the Digital Age

For Black and marginalized communities, the “Calculus of Resistance” has shifted. We are no longer just fighting physical exclusion. We are fighting algorithmic erasure and digital dehumanization. When sophisticated tools like voice cloning and face-swapping are used to propagate hate, it is a deliberate attempt to poison the digital ecosystem that our youth are currently learning to navigate.

Our Technical and Ethical Position

  • The Perversion of the “Virtual Assistant”: AI should be used to solve complex problems, not to create “AI slop” that serves as high-tech propaganda.

  • Algorithmic Accountability: We demand that platforms move beyond “post-and-delete” tactics. We need proactive detection and bias audits to identify when AI is used to target protected groups.

  • We believe the proper defense against digital bias is ownership. Empowering communities to own their datasets and sovereign systems fosters a sense of collective responsibility and agency in shaping ethical AI.

A Call to Action for the Diaspora

We urge our network of STEAM professionals, educators, and parents to treat this not as a political event, but as a literacy event.

  • Critical Media Literacy: We must teach our students and community members to verify synthetic media with confidence, fostering a sense of empowerment and responsibility in navigating digital content.

  • Community-Led Data: We call for developing community-owned datasets that accurately and respectfully represent the Black experience, fostering trust and pride in local narratives.

  • Strategic Advocacy: Support legislation that targets the malicious use of deepfakes, particularly in Maryland and other regions where we lead the charge for STEAM equity.

We will not allow the tools of the future to be used to drag us back to the prejudices of the past. Our resistance is rooted in our excellence.
