The Two Uniforms of a Scientist

I used to think my authority in STEAM only came from my lab coat.

I was wrong.

True authority in STEAM doesn’t just come from data; it comes from the ability to translate innovation into a story that sparks the soul.

I operated under the traditional scientific method: Observe, Hypothesize, Experiment, Conclude. But seeing the “Missing Millions” and the call to increase representation, I realized that sharing personal stories can inspire and connect us, making you feel valued and motivated to contribute to a more inclusive science community.

In the lab, we are taught to be objective. To be “cold.” But in the classroom, and in the pages of a children’s book, we must be “warm.” I remember being told in college: ‘Don’t humanize your research.’ At the time, I obeyed. Today, I look at the ‘Missing Millions,’ and I ask: Why not? Could that coldness be exactly why we are losing them?

I am currently running an experiment: Can storytelling about a cell’s journey, like Adanna’s Magical Pearls, inspire children more than a 500-page textbook? I believe stories can ignite curiosity and passion, making science more accessible and engaging for young minds.

The Core Insight: When I write about Adanna’s Magical Pearls or Gluca’s Great Adventure, I am not “dumbing down” biology. I am translating complex concepts into engaging stories that maintain scientific integrity while fostering understanding and inspiring others to share their own stories by being a guest on STEAMSparksThinkSTEAMCareer, sparking next-generation interest in STEAM careers.

  • A “Mitochondrion” is a technical term.

  • An “Energy Factory” is an invitation. One builds a wall; the other builds a bridge.

Here is a Question for my Community in STEAM:

What was the first “story” that made you fall in love with your field? Was it a book? A mentor? Or a moment of wonder? Sharing your story can inspire others and help you feel connected to a supportive community.

I want to hear your story. In fact, I want to host you on the STEAM Sparks podcast to help us spark the next generation.

If you believe #STEAM needs more “sparks” and less “cold facts,” let’s talk. Your story might be the bridge a child is waiting for.

Quote, "In a two-dimensional world, you can only see, hear, and feel left and right, length and width, black and white. What happens when you consider other possible dimensions? Could up, down, and diagonal be a possibility? Could the Z-line be a possibility? Could other possibilities be a reality? Could you be like Jamie Fox in one of his music videos, saying, “I have got options,” and ready to exhale! ~ Dr. Ayo Olufade
